IHC MAN 57 Task - CLOSED
I couldn't help but notice that we had a large number of first class entries submitted very quickly this week. It seems I'm losing my touch and the task was too easy ...
... so this week I'm handing over control to Evie my Grand-daughter, (well I may help out a little, she is only two after all!).
She's fascinated by my computer and animations in particular, an interest sparked by Georgie Fry's 'Purple Duck' from when we did them previously. So the task this week is to produce an animation that has 'kiddie appeal'. We're not looking for Pixar quality here and the animation doesn't need to be super smooth. In fact a certain amount of jerkiness may, with the right image, give added appeal.
Here's a simple 3 frame animation which was well received ...

Remember you can't post animations in your gallery, so upload a static shot taken from it, so people can leave comments, and then include the animation in a post below it as here.
If you're not sure how to do animations, I think most popular software now supports animated GIFs, post your queries here.
I'll leave the subject up to you but Ducks, Cats, Dogs, Rabbits, In The Night Garden and Thomas the Tank Engine should go down well. You don't have to use your own images, but the usual copyright considerations apply.
Don't expect a detailed critique ... but it will be brutal! 'Big' signifies approval, (a demand for the scroll mouse so she can make it larger). Disaproval, as with my animated Snow Globe at Christmas, prompts the question, 'Where's the Duck?'.
Registration thread will be posted Sunday evening. Good luck and have fun.
[This task has nothing whatsoever to do with the fact she's coming to stay for the week and I need to keep her entertained!]
Howard
The rules ...
- The IHCMan is for the purpose of exploring software.
- The person setting the task tries to find tutorials for others to follow - but as there are so many different programmes this is not always possible for all softwares.
- There is a discussion thread and a registration thread
- A copy of the photo is NOT inserted into the thread - just Mine's in and the photos link.
- The person setting the task is responsible for posting the two threads, labelling them CURRENT whilst the task is active and CLOSED when it has finished
- The IHCMAN does not have winners, as softwares, experience and creativity are variable just the experience and satisfaction of completing a task. It is therefore important for CC's to be given by as many folk as possible who are also entrants.
- The resultant image can be something from stock, photoshop brushes, other imagery as long as there is no copyright issues on imagery used.

A good task, especially with the twist of being child 'friendly'. I've been thinking of having a go at simple animation so this will make me actually do it.

Here's something I did many many moons ago to amuse my daughter (Well me really !) and when I had first discovered manipulation although I didn't have the knowledge, skills or software to do a proper animation. It was a series of 10 jpegs which I showed in slideshow so that when viewed consecutively they appeared to "move"......my skills may have improved slightly since that early attempt....I hope!

Have a heart Howard - some of us have grandchildren coming to stay who want to be up and doing - chances of them being amused/fascinated by animations on the PC are slim - more like wind surfing, swimming, adventure playgrounds, tank museum (with a ride on the tank), Sea World, and if it isn't actually snowing - building sandcastles. Of course if it is snowing it will be toboganning, snow men and snow fights! So if nothing appears this week you'll know that the activity centre was working over-time. And don't worry - your two year old will get to that stage too when animations will be worth no more than a glance, and you will be hauling your self through all sorts of activities which you never thought you'd do!

Angie,
I do hope so, although I do want her to learn how to use the 'pooter' as soon as possible. That way she can sort out her Nan out when she has a problem ... usually about 5 times a day!

A quick 3 frame one using a couple of snow photos.
I thought there must be a giggle factor somewhere.
Buster chased his ball into deep snow resulting in the final frame!

I have really no idea about animations,
I have done a very simple one, stored as a gif file in my pictures but it won`t upload even in the comment boxes... any advice
( it took about 10 layers in gimp!)

Possibly to large a file size Marion, (Stuarts is 1.1 MB, mine is 220K) or having too large an image will also do it.

Marion,
I don't know GIMP, but if you Google 'Animated GIF GIMP tutorial' you should find plenty of material to sort that side out if that's where the problem is.
As for Mr Fuji, animated GIFS will not upload to the Gallery. You can upload them to comment posts. The Maximum width is 535 pixels, (I think and no restrictions on height). You have a maximum of 10MB that can be uploaded via 'tiny_mice', (or whatever it's called). If you have a big file it may be that you have exceeded your limit. If so you will either have to delete previous images, they will disappear from the post they were in, or re-size the animation.
Let us know how you get on I'm sure someone will come up with the answer!

When I uploaded my GIF file I was surprised to see that the animation was not working. Then I realised that there had been a message to say that the dimensions had been above 535 x 535 pixels, and that it had been automatically resized. So I reduced each frame to 400 pixels wide and rebuilt the .gif file. Each frame was saved as a jpg file optimised for the web before using the animation software to build the gif. Software was PSP X and Jasc Animation Shop, final file size 400x303 pixels - 138kb.

I`ll try reducing all the sizes, mine was far bigger than 535x535..
..... & it looks like this week is going to be a good time for being indoors according to the forecasts!!

Thanks Marion and Stuart. I just popped in for a few mins. while they clean their teeth. Not the babe, of course, he's still in hospital and without a single tooth. Big sister actually lost a tooth today and the tooth fairy amazed me. £5 is the going rate, I was lucky to get 6d/2.5p
Sorry Howard! I know this is naught to do with your challenge.
Spread a little happiness.

I've been trying to find a bit of time to do this... but so far no joy. I'm so sorry to disappoint the founder member of the purple duck fan club.
Still trying to make up lost holiday snow days, plus kitchen being rebuilt and half term is just making it impossible!
Anne R you were conned.... the going rate here is £1 per tooth.... and £2.00 if a tooth falls out on your birthday..... Harry lost 2 teeth on his birthday (darn)
Better out than in... better up than down!

Bob & Chris....I wish you hadn't posted those links.......one thing led to another and two more hours of my life have just evaporated looking at some hilarious clips starting with your two and going on to crazy Penquins, lazy Polar Bears, dancing Evian Babies and this one which nearly ended me...sore sides and wet trousers....not sure if it's tears of laughter or if I just wet myself! !

I won't manage an entry this week, sorry Howard. Too much happening with work and essential DIY.
Will try to leave comments though

A big thanks to everyone who entered this week.
All were well received, not a single one prompted a 'Where's the duck?' response, (which is more than can be said for some of the ones I've done for her). Some really imaginative entries and lots of ideas for me to try out for myself.
I'll close the thread shortly so we can all go psychedelic.
